In what has come as an embarrassing moment on the field, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Singh was shown a yellow card by the on-field umpire during the clash against Belgium after 12 Indian players were on the turf during play.
The incident happened in the 11th minute of play, when Harmanpreet was suddenly shown a yellow card. It was later clarified that there were 12 Indian players on the turf, resulting in the card for the skipper.
A yellow card for this reason meant Harmanpreet had to sit out for five minutes of play, which included one minute into the second quarter.
Rule 2.2 of the hockey rulebook classifies the incident as an illegal or faulty substitution. In such cases, the umpires are required to stop play and hold the team skipper responsible.
The captain is then shown a personal penalty card, either a Green Card, resulting in a two-minute suspension, or a Yellow Card, carrying a minimum five-minute suspension.
The rule further states that the additional player, in this case Harmanpreet, must leave the field, while the team has to play with a reduced number of players for the duration of the skipper’s suspension.
