The situation at LPU escalated after social media posts circulated allegations concerning the alleged rape and death of a female student. Police and university authorities disputed the claims, but protests intensified, with students damaging property, setting parts of buildings on fire and blocking the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway. The university subsequently suspended regular classes for 10 days and postponed its mid-term examinations until further notice. Students were also advised to remain in their hostels or places of residence if they chose to stay on campus and avoid unnecessary movement during the period of unrest.
Amid the backlash, the Lovely Professional University (LPU) on Monday reiterated that its campus is safe and that normal activities are continuing, even as fresh questions emerged over a video released by the university amid the protests.
After normalcy returned to the campus, a joint meeting was held between the university administration, civil and police authorities, and student representatives.
According to LPU, students who attended the meeting said the unrest was mainly caused by outsiders who allegedly entered the campus illegally and attempted to disturb the peace. The university said the matter was being investigated and appropriate action would be taken according to law.
LPU also said it had reviewed information circulating on social media and strongly rejected what it described as baseless and false claims. It appealed to students, parents and the wider community to rely only on verified information.
The university further praised students who had come forward on social media and spoken to the media to counter what it called false claims. It said their response reflected the maturity and responsibility of the wider student community.
LPU Released Video Amid Protests
The statement comes a day after LPU released a video featuring Registrar Dr Monica Gulati and three female students from Room No. 504 of the hostel.

On Monday, however, the three students gave a different account of the video. They alleged that the university had not taken their consent before publishing the clip and claimed they were now facing abuse and harassment following its release.
The students also alleged that the video posted by the university had been cropped. Their claims have not been independently verified.
