Days after publicly apologising and seeking forgiveness, BSP chief Mayawati’s nephew Akash Anand has been taken back into the Bahujan Samaj Party and reappointed as its National Coordinator. The decision restores him to the key organisational post, months ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections scheduled to be held next year. Mayawati announced the decision on Monday, ending Akash’s expulsion from the party.

From expulsion to re-induction

Akash Anand was removed from all organisational responsibilities on September 3. A week later, on September 10, he was “completely freed” from the BSP, effectively ending his association with the party. His return came after he publicly appealed to Mayawati for another opportunity to work under her leadership.

On October 2, Akash posted an open letter on X in which he described Mayawati as his “political mentor, inspiration and like a mother”. He said his earlier silence on social media had been misunderstood and sought forgiveness from the BSP chief.

Three days later, Mayawati decided to take him back into the party and appointed him National Coordinator once again.

Why Mayawati had expelled Akash

Mayawati had accused Akash of giving priority to family ties over party discipline. She had pointed to his failure to repost one of her social media posts concerning his father-in-law, former Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Siddharth, as an indication of divided loyalty.

Mayawati later expelled Siddharth from the BSP as well. She had said Akash appeared to be acting under his father-in-law’s influence.

In his October 2 apology, Akash backed Mayawati’s decision to expel Siddharth. He said he had distanced himself from social media at the time and, therefore, could not repost Mayawati’s post.

Akash said his silence had been misunderstood and had led to rumours. He also asked for forgiveness if his actions had hurt Mayawati. He reaffirmed that the BSP was his “family” and ruled out joining any other political party.

Third expulsion and return since 2024

Akash’s latest re-induction is not the first time Mayawati has removed him from the BSP and later brought him back.

Reports note that this is his third expulsion-and-return cycle since 2024. His earlier sackings and reinstatements were also linked to concerns over perceived disloyalty and the influence of his father-in-law.

The latest return comes at a significant time for the BSP, with the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections due next year.
