Star Portugal and Manchester City centre-back Ruben Dias has said that he and his team trust the club despite the innumerable financial breaches, adding that the team is calm and is focused on enjoying football, after questions were raised over their vociferous celebrations after a 3-0 win over Liverpool.
Manchester City were jeered by Liverpool fans throughout their win at Anfield last weekend, a result that sent them to the top of the Premier League table with six victories from as many matches, three points ahead of defending champions Arsenal.
It was City’s first outing since the club was found guilty of more than 100 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial fair-play rules.
“I really feel like I speak for the whole group; we trust the club. We are very calm and we are very focused on enjoying football. We know the team we have got, we want to make the most out of it, we want to win and that is the only thing in our mind,” Dias said.
“If there is more or less noise or whatever the reason the noise is, at the end of the day it is all the same, same as before, because people don’t love us winning and we love to win,” Dias added.
City will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday, their first European outing since the landmark verdict found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules, putting their top-flight status at risk.
PSG have long sought to emulate Manchester City’s sustained success and have now established themselves among Europe’s elite, winning successive Champions League titles while continuing to dominate French football.
Abu Dhabi-backed Manchester City defeated Qatar-owned PSG to become the first of the two clubs to win the Champions League, lifting the trophy in 2023.
Manchester City’s 2023 Champions League win against Inter Milan in Istanbul, which completed a treble of European and domestic titles, marked the pinnacle of the club’s rise since its 2008 takeover led by Sheikh Mansour, the UAE’s vice-president and deputy prime minister.
