Japan’s Aeon maintained its FY26 outlook after H1 revenue rose 13.8 per cent to ¥5.90 trillion ($37.27 billion) and operating profit increased 10.7 per cent to ¥130.7 billion ($825.61 million).
Net profit surged 229.1 per cent to ¥13.3 billion ($84.01 million).
ASEAN operations supported growth amid retail pressures. Full-year revenue was forecast at ¥12 trillion ($75.80 billion).

International business revenue grew 12.1 per cent to ¥315.1 billion (~$1.99 billion), with operating profit up 15 per cent to ¥5.6 billion (~$35.37 million). ASEAN operations, led by Malaysia and Vietnam, offset weaker conditions in China (plus Taiwan), Aeon said in a press release.

Retail businesses face pressure

Supermarket operating revenue declined 1.2 per cent to ¥1.53 trillion (~$9.66 billion), resulting in an operating loss of ¥0.1 billion (~$631,682), compared with an operating profit of ¥12.8 billion (~$80.86 million) a year earlier.

The general merchandise store revenue increased 2.6 per cent to ¥1.87 trillion (~$11.81 billion), but its operating loss widened to ¥12.6 billion (~$79.59 million) from ¥0.2 billion (~$1.26 million). Discount store revenue rose 0.7 per cent to ¥218.6 billion (~$1.38 billion), while operating profit fell 87.7 per cent to ¥0.4 billion (~$2.53 million).

Aeon plans to restructure pricing and promotional policies, expand sales of its Topvalu private-brand products, improve fresh-food and delicatessen offerings, and reduce facility, energy and promotional costs to improve food retail profitability in the second half.

Financial services and structural reform

Financial Services operating revenue advanced 11.3 per cent to ¥307.6 billion (~$1.94 billion), although operating profit declined 3.3 per cent to ¥26 billion (~$164.24 million), reflecting one-off costs associated with new domestic core systems. Service and Specialty Store revenue increased 1.6 per cent to ¥314.2 billion (~$1.98 billion), while operating profit fell 19.1 per cent to ¥7.1 billion (~$44.85 million).

The group continued portfolio reforms, including the sale of its Thai retail business to concentrate resources on Vietnam, the delisting and full acquisition of G-FOOT, and the planned liquidation of an Aeon Fantasy China subsidiary. It said it had completed withdrawal, sale, restructuring or business and functional consolidation measures involving more than 40 companies.

FY26 outlook remains unchanged

Aeon maintained its FY26 forecast for operating revenue of ¥12 trillion (~$75.80 billion), representing growth of 12 per cent YoY. It continues to expect operating profit of ¥340 billion (~$2.15 billion), up 25.7 per cent, ordinary profit of ¥290 billion (~$1.83 billion), up 19.3 per cent, and profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥73 billion (~$461.13 million), up 0.4 per cent. The company expects its growth businesses and food retail profit-structure reforms to support delivery of the full-year targets.
