Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar scripted history during the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 Plate match against Nagaland in Dimapur on Monday. After being asked to bat first, Mizoram declared their first innings at 581/9 on Day 2, thanks largely to a monumental knock from Sutar, who smashed 400 runs. With the innings, Sutar became only the second batter in Ranji Trophy history to score 400 runs in an innings. The first to achieve the feat was Maharashtra’s BB Nimbalkar, who scored 443* against Pune in 1948.

Sutar now holds the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history, behind Nimbalkar’s unbeaten 443. Former India opener Prithvi Shaw occupies the third spot with 379 runs, scored for Mumbai against Assam during the 2022-23 season.

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar is fourth on the list with 366 runs for Mumbai against Hyderabad in the 1990-91 season. MV Sridhar rounds out the top five with 344 runs for Hyderabad against Andhra Pradesh during the 1993-94 campaign.

Overall, Sutar became just the 10th player in First-Class cricket history to score 400 in an innings, joining an elite group featuring legends such as Brian Lara, Don Bradman, and several other greats of the game. Lara is on the top of the list with 501* for Warwickshire against Durham.

His marathon innings was studded with 46 fours and seven sixes. Apart from Sutar’s heroics, Jehu Anderson contributed 69 runs as Mizoram declared at 581/9.

Interestingly, Sutar made his List A debut for Mumbai earlier this year in January against Maharashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, his first outing was a forgettable one as he was run out for just two runs.

He later made his first-class debut in Mizoram’s season opener earlier this month. After scoring 35 in the first innings against Manipur, Sutar bounced back impressively with a knock of 99 in the second innings.
