India’s Sharath Makanahalli was upgraded from bronze to silver in the men’s 1500m T12 event at the Asian Para Games on Wednesday after the original gold medallist was disqualified for a rule violation.

Uzbekistan’s Fakhriddin Khamraev was awarded gold after clocking 4:07.48, while Jordan’s Nabeel Maqableh took silver in 4:07.97. Makanahalli finished third with a time of 4:11.01.

But after a protest by Jordan’s Maqableh, Khamraev was disqualified under Rule TR 18.1 (b) of World Para Athletics. Maqableh was awarded the gold medal, while Makanahalli was upgraded to silver.

Rule TR 18.1 (b) mandates the disqualification of an athlete for jostling or obstructing a competitor to gain an unfair advantage.

India para athletics chief coach Satyanarayana told PTI that Khamraev was disqualified for overtaking his Jordanian rival from the left instead of the right during the final 200 metres of the race.

The T12 category is meant for athletes with visual impairments who have limited vision. Depending on the event and personal preference, they can compete either with or without a guide runner.

Meanwhile, Anubhav Choudhary (men’s 100m T35), Parveen (men’s shot put F46), Rakeshbhai Bhatt (men’s 100m T37), Ravi Rongali (men’s shot put F40), Sukhchain (men’s javelin throw F55), Pranav Desai (men’s 100m T64), Shailesh Kumar (men’s long jump T42/61/63), Karamjyoti Dalal (women’s discus throw F55) and Haney (men’s discus throw F37) clinched bronze medals.

Ayush gave India the first gold of the day in the men’s javelin throw F53/F54 event. The 35-year-old from Meerut, who suffered a spinal cord injury in a road accident that confined him to a wheelchair, produced a throw of 8.16m in his fifth attempt to take the top spot.

F53 is for field athletes who have movement affected to a high degree in the trunk and legs. They compete in seated positions and generate inertia using their chest, upper-back and shoulders.
