India continued their unbeaten run in the Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) with a commanding 8-0 victory over South Korea in their final round-robin match in Jalandhar on Monday. The five-time champions finished the league stage with a perfect record of five wins from five matches, collecting 15 points to top the standings.
The result also set up a repeat of Monday’s fixture in the semifinals, with India scheduled to face South Korea again in Mohali on Wednesday. Japan and Malaysia will contest the other semifinal.
India had earlier defeated Bangladesh 13-0, China 5-2, Japan 4-1 and Malaysia 4-2 to maintain their unbeaten record and strengthen their bid for a successful title defence.
Dilpreet Singh scored twice in the contest, finding the net in the eighth and 40th minutes. Jugraj Singh (11th), Harmanpreet Singh (15th), Shilanand Lakra (33rd), Sukhjeet Singh (34th), Sanjay (36th) and Angad Bir Singh (60th) scored the remaining goals.
India made an aggressive start and created their first opportunity in the fourth minute. However, South Korean goalkeeper Jaehyeon Kim denied Sukhjeet’s reverse hit following a pass from skipper Harmanpreet.
The breakthrough arrived four minutes later when Dilpreet converted Jarmanpreet Singh’s pass with a reverse hit. Jugraj then doubled India’s advantage in the 11th minute, scoring from a rebound after South Korea failed to convert two consecutive penalty corners.
Harmanpreet made it 3-0 just 30 seconds into the second quarter, converting India’s third penalty corner with a powerful low flick. South Korea attempted to fight back and earned four penalty corners in the first half but failed to find a way past the Indian defence.
India resumed their attacking dominance after the crossover. Shilanand scored in the 33rd minute from a rebound after Kim saved Jugraj’s flick from a penalty-corner variation. Sukhjeet added another a minute later with a field goal following a well-worked move involving Harmanpreet and Sanjay.
Sanjay then extended India’s lead in the 36th minute with another field goal before Dilpreet struck his second four minutes later. The forward got a slight deflection on Sanjay’s strike after receiving an aerial pass from Harmanpreet.
India continued to create chances but could not add to their tally until the final minute, when Angad Bir Singh scored with a reverse-hit field goal to complete the 8-0 rout.
South Korea earned two consecutive penalty corners just before the final hooter but failed to get on the scoresheet.
