The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has retained its status as India’s top-ranked institution in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027, even as it slipped seven places to 66th position from 59th last year. The University of Delhi (DU), meanwhile, has dropped out of the region’s top 100, moving down to 106th from 95th.
The rankings, released by global higher education consultancy QS Quacquarelli Symonds on Tuesday, indicate a decline in the positions of all six of India’s highest-ranked universities. This year’s edition covers 1,722 institutions across 26 higher education systems, with 195 universities making their debut.
QS Asia Rankings 2027: IIT Bombay Secures 10th Spot
Despite its fall in the overall rankings, IIT Delhi performed strongly in employer reputation, securing the seventh spot in Asia. IIT Bombay followed as India’s second-best institution in this category, ranking 10th regionally.
Several Indian universities registered gains. Chandigarh University advanced to 104th from 109th, while Lovely Professional University rose to 154th from 187th. Jamia Millia Islamia also moved up, securing the 183rd position compared with 197th in the previous edition.
India continues to have the second-largest representation in the rankings, with 325 institutions listed, including 34 new entrants. Its presence has expanded considerably since 2016, when just 24 Indian universities featured in the regional rankings.
However, the rankings point to gaps in research influence and internationalisation. Only three Indian universities feature among Asia’s top 50 for Citations per Paper. The country also trails the regional average in indicators covering international faculty, overseas students and student exchanges.
