22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal has said that he wants to thank Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and the other board members for proposing his name to join them, adding that he would readily accept it with a desire to learn.

The club announced the same on Wednesday.

Nadal has been an honorary member of the club since 2011 and shares a close bond with Perez.

“I want to thank President Florentino Pérez and the Board for proposing that I join the Board of Directors of @realmadrid,” Nadal tweeted on Wednesday evening.

Nadal, a lifelong Real Madrid supporter with membership number 67,778, shared a childhood picture of himself wearing the club kit in his response to the news.

Real Madrid described it as a source of immense pride for the club and its supporters to have someone of Nadal’s sporting and personal stature, a benchmark in Spanish and world sport, join its board of directors and contribute to its present and future.

Real Madrid’s socios (club members) are expected to ratify Nadal’s appointment at the club’s general assembly on Saturday, November 21.

Nadal, 40, won a record 14 French Open singles titles in a glittering career.

In 2023, Nadal said that he would like to become Real Madrid president one day, but admitted he was unsure whether he was qualified for the role.

Ahead of the club elections this year, Nadal distanced himself from reports suggesting he would stand as a candidate.

Perez triumphed in June, defeating Enrique Riquelme.

Alongside his brilliant haul of 22 Grand Slam titles, Nadal won two Olympic gold medals and helped Spain lift the Davis Cup five times before retiring from professional tennis in 2024.
