The Education Ministry will introduce Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking from Grade 3 in schools starting 2026–27, aligning with NEP 2020 and NCF SE 2023.

The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L) under the Ministry of Education has announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) will become part of the school curriculum from Class 3 onwards beginning in the 2026–27 academic session.
The move aims to prepare students for a technology-driven future and aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SE) 2023. The Department is working with CBSE, NCERT, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), and State and Union Territory education departments to design an inclusive and meaningful curriculum.
A stakeholder consultation was held on October 29, 2025, with participation from CBSE, NCERT, KVS, NVS, and external experts. The Central Board of Secondary Education has formed an expert committee led by Prof. Karthik Raman from IIT Madras to develop the AI and CT curriculum.
Speaking at the consultation, Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, DoSE&L, said education in AI should be treated as a universal skill linked to The World Around Us (TWAU). “Every child’s distinct potential is our priority. Our job as policymakers is to define the minimum threshold and re-evaluate it based on the changing needs,” he said.
He added that teacher training and resource materials will play a key role in implementing the new curriculum. Training under NISHTHA and video-based learning resources will support teachers in adapting to the new subjects. Collaboration between NCERT and CBSE through a Coordination Committee will ensure smooth integration and quality assurance.
“It is good to have cross-national and cross-international Boards analysis and have an international perspective, but it needs to be specific to our needs,” Shri Kumar said.
