Sweden’s Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis broke his own world record after successfully defending his world pole vault title in Tokyo on Monday.

He narrowly missed success on his first two attempts, but, encouraged by an enthusiastic crowd at the National Stadium, he managed to clear the bar on his third try, despite a slight wobble before it steadied. Duplantis had already wrapped up the competition with a winning vault of 6.15m before raising the bar another 15cm. He cleared 6.30m on his third attempt to set his 14th world record.

The 25-year-old dashed off the mat, circled the track, and then ran into the stands for a passionate kiss with his partner and a quick embrace with his parents, to the delight of a packed National Stadium. As he made his way back, his rivals surrounded him, and he was draped in a Swedish flag.

In a display of total dominance, Duplantis was the only athlete to clear 6.15 metres. Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis secured the silver medal with a best of 6.00m, while Australian Kurtis Marschall claimed bronze with 5.95m, winning on a countback against American Sam Kendricks.

Mondo’s Dominating Run

The 25-year-old vaulter’s confidence and dominance were on full display on Saturday, when he sailed through the qualifiers with just two comfortable attempts that looked like nothing more than a warm-up routine.

Asked if he would attempt 6.30m – one centimetre up on his current record set last month in Budapest – he had said, “That’s what I want to do. I feel like it’s possible… I feel like it’s in the cards.”

Duplantis has brought rare attention to a discipline that typically takes a backseat to the thrilling track events.

One of the most unforgettable moments was at the Paris Games last year when, as the final act of the day, Duplantis broke his own world record on his last attempt, to deafening cheers from the 69,000-strong crowd at Stade de France.
