Premier League side Arsenal are in discussion with midfielder Thomas Partey over an extension on his current contract with the club, which is set to come to an end on the 30th of June.
The 31-year-old Ghanaian midfielder has also attracted interest from Spanish champions Barcelona on a free transfer, but the Gunners would look to hold onto their player, considering the swathe of names on their way out of the club.
Italy Jorginho, Scot Kieran Tierney, Brazilian shot-stopper Neto and Englishman Raheem Sterling, a season-long loan addition from Chelsea, are all set to depart the London club.
Head coach Mikel Arteta, set to go trophyless for the fifth consecutive year, emphasized the need for the Londoners to be ruthless in the upcoming transfer window to bolster their attack. Despite challenging for the English top-flight title, they have finished second best for the third season in a row.
Arteta’s team was hindered by injuries affecting key players such as Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus. Additionally, the absence of a natural number 9, who could consistently score goals, proved detrimental.
“Regarding Thomas, this has been his most consistent season. His performance, play, and availability have been exceptional. He is a really important player for us,” Arteta noted earlier.
The London side’s most recent piece of silverware came in the year 2020 with the FA Cup title manager Mikel Arteta managed to win.
In addition to finishing second to Liverpool in the PL, Arsenal were ousted from the UEFA Champions League and the League Cup in the semi-finals in the recently concluded season.
