In a tragic turn of events that has deeply affected Assam, iconic singer Zubeen Garg, aged 52, passed away on Friday in Singapore. As a mark of respect, the Assam government has decided to postpone school examinations. Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu directed the postponement of Saturday’s half-yearly school examinations following the singer’s demise on Friday evening.

“In view of the untimely death of Late Zubeen Garg, all Inspectors of Schools/DEEO are instructed to postpone the half-yearly examination scheduled tomorrow until the cremation of the mortal remains of the legendary artist,” Minister Ranoj Pegu announced on X on Friday evening.

The renowned artist, famous for his timeless hits like “Ya Ali” and captivating Assamese folk performances, traveled to Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival when tragedy struck. Singapore police rescued him from the sea and rushed him to Singapore General Hospital, where he passed away at approximately 2:40 p.m. local time despite intensive care efforts.

Originally named Jibon Barthakur, Zubeen Garg hailed from Jorhat, Assam. He was born to Mohini M. Borthakur, a well-known lyricist and poet, and the late Ily Borthakur. He began learning tabla under Guru Robin Banarjee and later continued his education in Assamese folk music with Guru Romoni Rai.

Regarding his educational background, Zubeen Garg attended J.B. College in Jorhat and then transferred to B. Barooah College to pursue a Bachelor of Science after his family moved permanently to Guwahati. However, he did not complete his degree as he ventured into the music industry.
