BMW CE 02 accounts for 65 percent of Indian electric scooter exports

TVS Motor Co, which manufactures the BMW CE 02 and the popular iQube at its Hosur factory, accounts for 86 percent of total made-in-India electric two-wheelers shipped to overseas markets in FY2025. It was followed by Ather Energy, which exported 805 e-scooters, and Bajaj Auto, which despatched 125 Chetaks.

This half-a-million mark has been crossed for the second time in a row

The Indian scooter industry had a record fiscal in FY2025 on multiple fronts. Not only were domestic market sales at 6.85 million units, but it also set a new benchmark by surpassing the half-a-million  mark for the second fiscal in a row. Now, it can be revealed that export of electric scooters also scaled a new high in FY2025. With just under 7,000 units shipped – a marked 325 percent YoY increase – demand rose sharply, albeit on a low year-ago base.

Of the over 5.69 lakh made-in-India scooters exported, electric scooters accounted for 1 percent share, up from zero percent in FY2024.

TVS Motor Co has had a red-letter fiscal in FY2025, which, with record scooter sales of over 1.81 million units, powers the company to a best-ever 3.51 million two-wheelers. Furthermore, TVS’ e-2W exports are also at a new high with total shipments of just under 6,000 units, up 404 percent YoY.

TVS’ EV exports continue to be powered by the BMW CE 02 electric scooter that it jointly manufactures with BMW Motorrad at its plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu and began exporting in April 2024. About 75 percent of the company’s e-2W exports comprise the BMW CE 02 – around 4,400 units,  with the balance 25 percent provided by the TVS iQube.

TVS Motor Co, which is the second largest two-wheeler exporter after Bajaj Auto, has a lot invested in the BMW CE 02 EV, whose platform has been jointly designed, developed and built by TVS and BMW Motorrad. 

Ather Energy exports 805 e-scooters

Ather Energy is ranked second on the e-2W export scale with 805 units. The bulk of the exports are of the Ather 450X while the 450S accounts for a 12 percent share in FY2025.

Bajaj Auto, which like TVS with its iQube, sold over 200,000 Chetaks in FY2025, exported 125 of the EV scooters last fiscal

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, which has recently entered the e-2W market with its Activa E and QC1, shipped 2 Activa Es overseas. These, most likely, would be to its parent company, Honda Motor Co in Japan.
