The 29th edition of the BWF World Championships is all set to start on Monday, August 25, in Paris. The French capital was named the host city for the event in November 2018, during the announcement of 18 major badminton tournaments scheduled from 2019 to 2025.

The World Championships are badminton’s most prestigious tournament, offering the highest ranking points alongside the Olympic badminton events, which were introduced in 1992.

The tournament began in 1977 and was held every three years until 1983. The International Badminton Federation faced challenges organising the first two editions, as the World Badminton Federation, later merged with the IBF, hosted a similar tournament a year after the IBF World Championships, pursuing the same objectives.

India At The BWF World Championships

India has been represented at the tournament since the first edition in 1977. In the inaugural edition in Malmo, World Championships bronze medallist Prakash Padukone, 1982 Asian Games bronze medallists Uday Pawar and Pradeep Gandhe and 1974 Asian Games bronze medallist Partho Ganguli were part of the Indian contingent.

India’s first women to play at the World Championships were 1978 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Ami Ghia and Amita Kulkarni, at the second edition of the tournament in Jakarta.

HS Prannoy, the 2023 bronze medallist, will start his campaign against Finland’s Joakim Oldorff, with a possible second-round clash against world No. 2 Anders Antonsen of Denmark posing a major challenge for the world No. 34 Indian.

Men’s doubles leaders Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, seeded ninth, have earned a first-round bye and will face either compatriots Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruben Kumar or Chinese Taipei’s Liu Kuang Heng and Yang Po Han in the second round.

In mixed doubles, 16th seeds Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto received a first-round bye, while Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde will face Macau’s Leong Lok Chong and Weng Chi Ng in their opening match.
