This victory propelled Gukesh to third place in the Norway Chess 2025 standings with 8.5 points, just one point behind Carlsen and American Fabiano Caruana.
Previously, on 27 May, the highly anticipated Round One clash at Norway Chess 2025 delivered a thrilling spectacle. Carlsen executed a classic king hunt to defeat reigning World Champion Gukesh in their first classical encounter since Gukesh claimed the world title. This match also marked Carlsen’s return to individual classical chess after almost a year.
Following the upset, Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna, commended the teenager’s tenacity and resilience. “We have to give a lot of credit to Gukesh for his stubbornness and resourcefulness because I think he was aware that he was dead lost for so long. Yet, he kept fighting, and as the time went lower, he had more chances to do something with the position. I don’t think his intention was to win that, but I’m sure he is happy,” Vishnu Prasanna stated.
This victory intensifies the competition in the tournament’s final rounds, making the race for the top spot even closer.
