Students who appeared for CBSE board exam 2026 must have noticed a QR code on the question paper. While many might think the code is merely decorative, but it serves a crucial purpose.
The QR code is used to enhance the security of the exam process. In the event of irregularities or paper leaks, it helps trace the source.
When Did The Use Of QR Codes On Question Papers Start?
CBSE began including QR codes on question papers in 2018. The primary objective is to make exams more secure and to uniquely identify each question paper. The QR code contains encrypted information such as the exam center’s location and the set number of the question paper. This enables the board to identify the center linked to a leaked question paper or photograph.
How Is The Exam Monitored Through QR Codes?
QR codes are not just for security; they also help collect various exam-related data. When question papers are handed out at the examination center, the QR code can be scanned. This allows the board to determine how many students took each subject’s exam. Additionally, QR codes help track the number of question papers printed and used.
Recently, an unusual incident occurred during the Class 12 Math exam held on March 9th this year. Some students reported that scanning the QR code on the question paper redirected them to a music video of the popular song “Never Gonna Give You Up.”
The CBSE quickly responded, assuring that the exam’s integrity was not compromised. The board acknowledged that in a few question paper sets, scanning a QR code appeared to link to a YouTube video. However, CBSE also stated that this issue does not compromise the security and authenticity of the question papers.
“It is hereby confirmed by the board that the question papers are genuine. The security of the question papers remains uncompromised,” the board stated in a press release.
