The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially scheduled the Class 12 Artificial Intelligence (AI) exam for February 27, 2026. As one of the board’s most future-oriented subjects, Artificial Intelligence blends technical learning with creative problem-solving and critical thinking.
The exam will carry a total of 100 marks, split equally between theory (50 marks) and practical/project work (50 marks). The paper tests not just textbook knowledge, but the student’s ability to apply AI principles to real-world challenges, from designing ethical algorithms to interpreting data narratives.
CBSE Class 12 AI Exam 2026: Structure
In line with last year’s pattern, the 2-hour exam will comprise 21 questions, out of which students must attempt 15. The paper will be divided into two sections, Section A (objective) for 24 marks, and Section B (subjective) for 26 marks.
The theoretical component includes both direct questions and higher-order thinking problems, encouraging students to merge conceptual understanding with analytical reasoning.
CBSE Class 12 AI Exam 2026: Key Areas
1. Employability Skills:
This segment, worth 10-15 marks, focuses on short and objective questions covering communication, self-management, ICT, entrepreneurship, and green skills. Students can expect practical questions on topics such as stress management, digital tools, and eco-friendly practices.
2. Subject-Specific Theory:
The core section of the paper assesses understanding of the AI Model Lifecycle, data acquisition, modeling, evaluation, and deployment. Students must also demonstrate their grasp of Data Storytelling, which connects data visualisation with narrative interpretation, and Model Evaluation Metrics such as RMSE and MSE, which measure model performance.
3. Case Studies and Application-Based Questions:
Case studies will test how students apply AI to real-world contexts, including chatbots, computer vision, natural language processing (NLP), and recommender systems. These questions are designed to assess innovation, ethical reasoning, and practical implementation through the Design Thinking framework – Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.
4. Practical and Project-Based Evaluation:
The internal assessment component will focus on project execution, model verification (including train-test split and cross-validation), and adherence to ethical AI guidelines. Capstone projects form a major part of this evaluation.
CBSE Class 12 AI Exam 2026: Preparation Strategy
Educators emphasise that AI in CBSE is a skill-based subject, demanding both conceptual clarity and hands-on understanding. Experts recommend a four-step approach to preparation:
- Analyse the Syllabus and Blueprint: Students should first map out the weightage of each topic. This helps prioritise sections that carry more marks or require deeper analytical engagement.
- Build Conceptual Strength: Instead of rote learning, focus on understanding the logic behind AI operations. Familiarise yourself with how models learn from data, how evaluation metrics function, and how data storytelling can make insights more persuasive.
- Focus on Practicals: Practising sample papers and previous year question sets is crucial to mastering the exam format. Students should also revise every stage of their capstone project, including sampling, model selection, and ethical considerations.
- Refine Answer Writing Skills: The case study and employability sections demand precise, concise, and structured responses. Writing short, direct answers in these areas can secure easy marks.
As AI continues to evolve as a vital global discipline, CBSE’s initiative to integrate it into the school curriculum is a step toward preparing the next generation for a data-driven future.
