The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a special writing competition for schoolchildren as part of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) 2026 International Letter Writing Competition for Young People, organised by the Department of Post. Winners will receive significant cash prizes and a chance to travel to Switzerland. The competition is open to students aged 9 to 15.

Competition Theme:

Participants must write a letter to a friend explaining why human connection is crucial in a digital world, emphasising the enduring importance of true friendship, family, and socialising, despite the prevalence of mobile phones and the internet. The letter can be written in either English or Hindi.

Eligibility:

School students between the ages of 9 and 15 across India can participate. Schools will organise the competition and submit their best entries to CBSE.

Prizes:

Prizes are awarded at both regional and national levels.

Regional Level:

– 1st place: Rs 25,000 + Certificate

– 2nd place: Rs 10,000 + Certificate

– 3rd place: Rs 5,000 + Certificate

National Level:

– 1st place: Rs 50,000 + Certificate + Visit to UPU Headquarters (Bern) in Switzerland or an alternative prize

– 2nd place: Rs 25,000 + Certificate

– 3rd place: Rs 10,000 + Certificate

“The International Bureau (IB) of the UPU, which coordinates this competition, will select three prize winners from among the best entries received from each member country. The winners will be awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, along with certificates and other prizes as decided by the UPU. The Gold Medalist may also be offered a visit to the UPU Headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, or an alternative prize at the discretion of the UPU. Participants receiving special mentions will also be awarded certificates and other prizes,” states the official notice.

Participation Process:

Interested children must complete an application form and submit it to their school, which will forward the top entries to CBSE. Schools must submit results by March 20, 2026. The top three contestants will be selected afterward. All information and forms are available on the CBSE official website cbse.gov.in. Winning could bring both monetary rewards and a trip to Switzerland.
