Indian badminton star PV Sindhu succumbed to a defeat in the quarterfinal of the China Open on Friday as she went down to the top-seeded An Se Young of South Korea.
The Korean eased past Indian Sindhu in straight games as Se Young registered a 21-14, 21-13 triumph to secure her berth in the semifinal of the event.
Sindhu, who has had a challenging year, moved to the quarters of the event with her triumph over sixth-seeded Pornpawee Chochuwong as the 30-year-old Sindhu put it past her Thai opponent with relative ease as she secured a win in straight games 21-15, 21-15 in a fixture that lasted just over 40 minutes, however, her shot at a first title of the season fell flat as she was no match for Se Young.
Later in the day the top-ranked Indian men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankiredy and Chirag Shetty will square up against Ren Xiang Yu and Haonan Xie of China in their quarterfinak encounter.
Sat-Chi, as they are fondly known, got the better of Hsiang Chien Chiu and Chi-Li Wang of Chinese Taipei in their Round of 16 matchup a day earlier.
Rankireddy and Shetty secured a 24-22, 21-13 victory in straight games against the Malaysian duo of Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap in a match lasting just over 42 minutes in the Ro32 fixture.
Men’s singles star Lakshya Sen was shown he exi door early at the event as he was defeated 11-21, 10-21 by Toma Junior Popov in a 30-minute contest, ending India’s men’s singles challenge following Ayush Shetty’s loss in his opening match.
The mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also exited the tournament after losing to second-seeded local favourites Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping 19-21, 13-21.
