McLaren’s Lando Norris cliched his maiden F1 title with a third place finish at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to edge out four-time winner Max Verstappen to the tops spot in dramatic fashion.

Norris tallied 423 points in the season to pip Verstappen, who registered 421 points with his Red Bull, and get his hands on the crown.

Four-time champion Alain Prost, congratulated the Brit on his first-time achievement, but reiterated that the Dutchman is in a league of his own.

“Congratulations to Lando, it is deserved. But Max,….Max is clearly above the rest,” the Frenchman said.

Verstappen pulled out all the stops in his valiant effort to chip away at the 102-point lead Norris held at one point in the season. However, the Brit tasted success following a strong season. In sharp contrast, Norris’ compatriot Lewis Hamilton experienced his first season without a podium finish in his debut Ferrari campaign.

Seven-time winner Hamilton’s impressive record in the top tier took a significant hit as he replaced Carlos Sainz at Ferrari, only to see the Spaniard elevate Williams to a fifth-place finish in the championship. Sainz secured two podium finishes during the season, aiding Williams in accumulating 137 points by the year’s end.

Sainz has a history of improving the standings of the teams he races for. With Renault, he witnessed the team rise from ninth place in his debut season in 2016 to fourth place by the time he left in 2018. At McLaren, he helped the team move from sixth place in 2018 to third in 2020. His subsequent move to Ferrari saw him help the iconic team climb from sixth place to second before his departure last year.
