Former England footballer David Beckham received a traditional welcome in India and also learnt how to prepare daal ki chaat, a classic Moradabadi dish, which he shared in a video on his social media and has, understandably, gone viral.
Beckham’s return to India, highlighted by his public appearances in Mumbai, has captured significant attention both online and offline. His visit reinforces a wider mission to promote inclusion and champion children’s rights through sport, as he works as UNICEF’s brand ambassador.
The visit began with a traditional Mumbai welcome, featuring marigold garlands, an aarti, and a tika, which gave Beckham a firsthand taste of local customs.
“So touched by everyone’s kindness… Thank you for my traditional welcome and Dal Ki Chaat lessons 🍲 Making some beautiful memories in Mumbai,” Beckham posted on his social media on Friday.
Beckham’s itinerary featured visits to UNICEF-supported community programmes centred on children and adolescents. At the Cooperage Football Ground in South Mumbai, Beckham joined youngsters from the Oscar Foundation, an organisation that uses sport to impart key life skills, for a football session.
The engagements highlighted Beckham’s continued commitment to using his platform for meaningful advocacy. While playing football with local youth, he showed his skills and engaged with children about their aspirations and everyday challenges.
The session created a meaningful bridge between Beckham and young people working to bring change to their communities. His participation underscored the need to create chances for young people, especially those from underserved backgrounds.
Beckham stressed the value of listening to their stories and backing their ambitions, reinforcing the mission of UNICEF’s local partnerships and outreach efforts.
“I am humbled by the drive, resilience and passion of the children and young people I met today… They are fighting for change at an early age and having a say in their future,” Beckham said.
