FIDE Women’s World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh announced on Friday that she would take part in the Open section of the FIDE Grand Swiss in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Deshmukh revealed that she would take part in the open section of the event that is slated to be held in Samarkand between the 3rd and 15th of September.
Deshmukh made history by winning the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025 in Batumi, defeating compatriot Humpy Koneru in the final. The 19-year-old clinched the title after a tie-breaker, following two drawn games in the classical format, also earning the Grandmaster norm.
She received $50,000 in prize money along with the prestigious trophy. More importantly, her victory earned her the Grandmaster title, making her India’s 88th Grandmaster in chess history.
Throughout the tournament, Deshmukh focused on reaching the final. Once there, she had only one goal in mind. She explained that she tries to block out external distractions, using meditation to handle the pressure of top-level competition.
Deshmukh took it one game at a time, only thinking about the title after reaching the final. She returned to her hometown, Nagpur, to a hero’s welcome. The chess community came together to celebrate her remarkable achievement, as she became the first Indian woman to win the prestigious title.
