Red Bull driver Max Verstappen raced to the chequered flag at the Losail Circuit to clinch the Qatar Grand Prix title ad prolong McLaren star Lando Norris’ quest for his maiden World Championship on Sunday.
Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri followed Verstappen, while Carlos Sainz of Williams completed the podium, with Norris clinching a fourth-place finish.
The in took Verstappen to 396 points in the season, with Norris leading the championship table with 408 to his name. Piastri stands third with 392 and a lot hinges on the final race in Abu Dhabi.
Verstappen has had a phenomenal comeback in the season as he has slashed Norris’ lead in the table to just 12 points, down from what was an astounding 104 after the Dutch Grand Prix.
“That was an incredible race for us. We made the right call as a team to box under the safety car and it was scrappy, but we got there in the end.”
Norris stands the chance to be crowned champion if he finishes on the podium in the Capital of the UAE, while Verstappen can make it five titles on the bounce if he wins and Norris finishes outside the top-three. Norris’ McLaren teammate Piastri stands the outside chance of becoming the champion if he manages to clinch the season-ending race in AD and Norris finishes outside the top-five.
“In hindsight, it’s pretty obvious what we should have done, but we’ll discuss it as a team. It’s obviously tough to swallow,” Piastri said following the conclusion of the race.
