Durga puja is being celebrated by the Bengali community in Mysuru with traditional gaiety and fervour.

The celebrations commenced on Maha Shashti on Sunday, followed by Maha Saptami celebrations on Monday, while the Maha Ashtami celebrations were held on Tuesday. The rhythmic beat of the ‘dhak’ and the ‘dhunuchi naach’ have been part of the daily aarti, while the puja was being performed as per the Bengali traditions.

The Bangiya Samithi is celebrating the Durga Puja at Leela Channaiah Kalyana Mantapa on the Valmiki Road, while the Bengali Association Mysooru is celebrating the festival at Shivanna P.V. Mahadevappa Kalyana Mantapa off KRS Road.

The cynosure of all eyes at the puja venues are the idols of Durga slaying the demon Mahishasura and flanked by other members of the family, including Saraswathi, Lakshmi, Karthikeya, and Ganesha.

B. Choudhary of the Bangiya Samithi said that there are nearly 5,000 Bengalis in Mysuru and the samithi has been conducting Durga Puja celebrations since 1979. Apart from the regular rituals, cultural programmes are conducted daily, he said.

Mrinmoy Chakraborty, vice-president of Bengali Association Mysooru, said the idols are made-to-order and artisans have come from Kolkata for the purpose. They establish temporary studio near Bengaluru to cater to the large Bengali community in the city. “We place orders and procure it from Bengaluru,” he added.

The priests who officiate during the puja ceremonies are from Kolkatta. Apart from the Bengali community, locals also took part in it, adding to cultural diversity.

The idols will be taken out in a procession on Dashmi which is on October 2, and immersed in the Cauvery at Sangam in Srirangapatna.
