The FC Goa senior team, which includes skipper Sandesh Jhingan, has agreed to take a pay cut as clubs have been hit by financial constraints amidst a delayed football season in the country, with the Indian Super League deferred to February from an usual November start.
Not just the players, but the senior team support staff have also agreed to the same.
FC Goa stated in a Thursday night post on X that it had ‘honest and difficult conversations’ with players and staff about the challenges ahead amidst the ongoing turmoil in Indian football.
“In a moment of real uncertainty for Indian football, our club had honest and difficult conversations about the challenges we are facing. What followed was something that made us incredibly proud,” the statement said.
“Our First Team players and Technical Staff stepped forward, stood together and chose to support the club by agreeing to reduce their remuneration during this period,” the statement said.
The AIFF Super Cup-winning team said that it was ‘deeply humbled by this gesture’ and ‘immensely grateful for the unity, character, and commitment’ demonstrated by the team.
“These moments remind us that this club is more than results on the pitch, it is about people, belief and standing together when it matters most. Thank you for fighting for the badge,” the statement said.
FC Goa have some other Indian footballers like Udanta Singh and Boris Singh in their roster.
Earlier this month, Bengaluru FC owner Parth Jindal urged footballers to ‘make sacrifices’ given the financial strain the club faces to take part in the delayed ISL, warning that without their support, the team could be forced to ‘shut shop for good’.
Jindal did not specify the nature of the ‘sacrifices’ expected from the players, but it might involve a salary reduction for this season. The team includes former India skipper Sunil Chhetri and star goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, among others.
