India’s winless streak at the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League continues.
India’s last-minute penalty goal was disallowed under dramatic circumstances, and Jugraj Singh failed to score after a retake, resulting in a 1-2 loss to Argentina, marking their fourth consecutive defeat in the European leg of the FIH Pro League hockey on Thursday.
Drag-flicker Jugraj gave India the lead in the fourth minute, converting the first penalty corner of the match. However, Tomas Domene scored twice for Argentina, in the 9th and 49th minutes, both from penalty corners, securing the win for his team.
In the final quarter, with India trailing 1-2, they earned a penalty stroke two minutes before the final whistle. Jugraj successfully scored, but Argentina requested a video referral, claiming that Jugraj’s left foot was ahead of the ball during the stroke. The video umpire ruled in Argentina’s favour. Subsequently, India captain Hardik Singh requested the referee to check if Argentina’s goalkeeper Tomas Santiago was ahead of the goal line before Jugraj took the stroke. The video umpire then ruled in India’s favour, allowing Jugraj to retake the stroke, but this time Santiago saved the shot.
Hardik led the Indian team, as regular captain Harmanpreet Singh was sidelined due to a finger injury.
Argentina earned eight penalty corners, while India managed just three.
India had previously lost 3-4 to the same opponents on Wednesday. Before that, they had suffered 1-2 and 2-3 defeats to Olympic champions Netherlands during this European tour of the Pro League.
This was India’s fourth and final match here. They will now travel to Antwerp, Belgium, to face formidable Australia on Saturday.
