Stating that it is “one of the best home remedies,” dietitian and nutritionist Tanvee Singh, and founder, Fatfree said it acts as a stimulant laxative, “which means it stimulates the muscles of the intestines to contract and move stool through the digestive system.”

Safety: “While generally considered safe in small doses, castor oil can cause cramping, diarrhoea, and dehydration. It’s important to stay hydrated and avoid overuse,” said Singh.

Precautions: According to Singh, pregnant women should avoid castor oil, as it can stimulate uterine contractions and may induce labour. “It’s also not recommended for people with certain medical conditions like bowel obstruction or inflammatory bowel disease,” said Singh.

External use: In some cases, castor oil is applied externally as a warm oil massage over the abdomen to relieve constipation, said Singh. “This technique is often combined with abdominal exercises or other Ayurvedic treatments to enhance digestion,” said Singh.

Proper diet and lifestyle: Ayurveda emphasises the importance of a balanced diet and lifestyle to prevent constipation. “Foods that are warm, moist, and oily, as well as adequate water intake, help to keep the digestive system functioning well,” said Singh, adding that addressing lifestyle factors like stress, inadequate sleep, and poor eating habits is an essential part of the treatment approach.

Hydration: Since castor oil has a strong purgative effect, staying well-hydrated after its use is crucial to avoid dehydration.
