WWE Superstar Gunther courted the ire of the fans as he decided to gloat about his most recent achievement as ‘The man who ended John Cena’s career’.
Gunther, who made Cena tap out in his final appearance in the WWE ring after a two-decade career at the SNME, gloated his win over the legendary wrestler.
“I made John Cena give up, and when he gave up, he tapped out like a little bitch,” the Ring General said.
“It is my time now. I will forever be the man that made John Cena give up,” he added.
Gunther, who had the honour of competing against the legendary Goldberg in his final match, added another accolade to his portfolio with his victory over Cena in the latter’s swansong.
“John has always said the right thing throughout his career — it’s about leaving this place better than you found it,” Triple H remarked.
“You do what’s right for the business, you do what’s right for this industry. John has done that his entire career, and I’m committed to doing the same throughout mine.”
Cena fought with everything he had left, escaping Gunther’s sleeper hold multiple times and delivering a final Attitude Adjustment that electrified the crowd. However, Gunther was relentless and succeeded on his sixth attempt. Cena managed a slight smile for the fans and cameras, ending his career on a high note.
This was only the fifth submission loss of Cena’s career and his first since 2004 when Kurt Angle made him tap out.
After the match, the locker room emptied. Cody Rhodes and CM Punk presented Cena with their world titles, honouring him as “The Last Real World Champion.” Cena basked in the moment, taking his final bows before leaving his sneakers and wristbands in the ring.
