Wayne Rooney had a hard time recognising his former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo by his haircut. The duo had shared the dressing room for five years and achieved tremendous success together at both domestic and European levels, winning the Premier League, the Champions League, and the League Cup. Their partnership broke after Ronaldo switched to Real Madrid in 2009. Rooney, however, stayed at Old Trafford until 2017 before returning to his boyhood club, Everton.
The England legend recently featured in a light-hearted interview with Prime Video Sport, where he tried to guess some of his ex-Manchester United teammates, only by looking at their hairstyle. The video, titled “Guess the player Wayne Rooney edition”, was dropped on Instagram.
Rooney made a confident start to the task. He was able to identify Marouane Fellaini, David de Gea, David Beckham and Nani correctly. He, however, needed some time to recall Paul Pogba’s blue dreadlocks and initially, mistook the Frenchman for Wilfried Zaha.
Next was Ronaldo, but Rooney found his hairstyle quite similar to that of Argentine striker Carlos Tevez, who represented Manchester United from 2007 to 2009. Rooney, however, rectified his mistake in his second guess and poked fun at his former colleague, saying, “He’ll be fuming with that.”
The bond between Rooney and Ronaldo was perhaps not the same after they parted ways. They also clashed in the infamous “red card winking” incident during a World Cup fixture between England and Portugal in 2006.
When Ronaldo returned to Manchester United for his second spell in 2021, Rooney openly criticised the Portuguese forward, saying, “The things he has done from the start of the season, it is not acceptable for Manchester United.”
Ronaldo later hit back at those remarks in a chat with Piers Morgan. “I don’t know why he criticises me so badly… probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at a high level. I’m not going to say that I’m looking better than him. Which is true,” said the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
While Ronaldo is currently plying his trade at the Saudi Pro League club, Al Nassr, Rooney has returned to punditry duties following his poor managerial campaign with Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle.
