Assam witnessed unrest this week following protests demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Koch-Rajbongshi community in Dhubri’s Golakganj. What started as a peaceful demonstration escalated into violent clashes after a police crackdown involving a lathi charge, resulting in several injuries. As a response, the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) called for a 12-hour bandh in Dhubri, causing widespread disruption.
Student Protest In Assam
On Wednesday evening, the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) organised a torchlight procession from Chilarai College to Golakganj Bazaar. The rally, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and a separate ‘Kamatapur’ state, attracted thousands of participants but was halted midway by police and paramilitary forces. Protesters have claimed that despite the peaceful nature of the march, security forces used lathi charge, causing injuries to several people, including women. This led to widespread anger and prompted the AKRSU to call for a 12-hour bandh in Dhubri on Thursday, disrupting normal activity in the district.
The demand for ST status is part of a larger push by six indigenous communities in Assam, including Koch-Rajbongshi, Tai-Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran, and Tea Tribes, seeking constitutional recognition and autonomy.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Reacts
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the police action as unfortunate and ordered an inquiry. He assured that no serious injuries were reported and promised strict action against any police personnel found guilty of excessive force. A high-level investigation has been launched targeting senior police officials, with a report expected within five days.
The Assam government has pledged to present a comprehensive report on the ST status demand of these communities during the upcoming November assembly session.
Assam Opposition Reacts
Opposition leader Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi condemned the harsh treatment of protesters, accusing the ruling BJP government of disregarding the dignity of indigenous communities.
Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi accused the state government of ignoring the challenges faced by tribal and indigenous communities.
