Hyundai Exter facelift launched at Rs 5.80 lakh – Introduction


Hyundai has launched the new Exter facelift with prices now ranging between Rs 5.80 lakh and Rs 9.42 lakh (ex-showroom). It gets cosmetic revisions on the outside with new bumpers, and a few other tweaks, while the interior gets a new dual-tone navy blue and grey finish and some feature additions. Mechanically, though, it remains unchanged from before.

With this update, Hyundai has also moved on to its new variant nomenclature as seen on the new Venue and Verna. For reference, the outgoing Exter was priced between Rs 5.64 lakh and Rs 9.38 lakh (ex-showroom).

As with all facelifts, the updates on the outside are primarily to the soft plastic parts. It gets a new front bumper that’s now primarily finished in black, houses a new grille and a silver contrasting trim on the lower portion. The ‘Exter’ branding has also been repositioned from the bumper to the trim connecting the LED DRLs, although there are no changes to the lighting setup.

In profile, it gets chunkier cladding over the wheel arches, a new design for the 15-inch alloy wheels and also a new C-pillar garnish. At the rear, there’s a new split spoiler, a revised bumper and a new finish for the trim connecting the tail lamps. Overall, the new Exter does appear more mature and stylish. With this update, Hyundai has also introduced two new colour options for the Exter: Golden Bronze and Titanium black matte.

On the inside, cosmetic updates are a lot less comprehensive, although it does get a new and more premium dual-tone navy blue and grey colour scheme as opposed to the all-black finish on the outgoing car. The seats also get new semi-fabric beige upholstery with new textures, there’s a new faux carbon-fiber like trim that runs across the dashboard, and a new flat-bottomed steering wheel.

On the features front, there are a few notable additions. The driver’s seat now gets a dedicated arm rest, there are new metal pedals, rear passengers now get type C USB ports and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now wireless via a portable adapter. Driver seat height adjustment and adjustable rear headrests have also been made standard across all variants, although the front headrests are still non-adjustable.

Other features such as the 8.0-inch touchscreen and 8.0-inch digital driver’s display, cruise control, auto AC, wireless charging, and single-pane sunroof continue as before. On the safety front, it gets six airbags, ESC, hill-start assist control and central locking as standard. Higher variants also get a dashcam, rear parking camera, automatic headlamps and more.

Under the hood, the Exter carries over the tried and tested 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 83hp and 114Nm of torque, and is offered with with 5-speed MT or AMT gearboxes. It also gets a factory-fitted dual-cylinder CNG kit that’s neatly tucked away under the boot floor.

In CNG spec, the Exter produces 69hp and 95Nm of torque, and is only offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Notably, even in CNG guise, Hyundai does offer the Exter with a spare tyre that’s located underneath the car. Boot space is rated at 225-litres in CNG spec, while its 391 litres in the regular petrol version. 

In the sub-compact SUV segment, the Hyundai Exter rivals the Tata Punch, prices for which range between Rs 5.59 lakh and Rs 10.54 lakh (ex-showroom).
