American legend Venus Williams scripted history with her win over Peyton Stearns on Wednesday in her opening round of the DC Open.
Williams became the oldest woman in over two decades, since Martina Navratilova in 2004, to register a win at the age of 45 years on the WTA circuit.
Following her win on her comeback, Williams joked that she returned to the courts in order to cover her insurance.

“I had to come back for the insurance,” the seven-time Grand Slam singles winner cracked.
“It is because they informed me this year that I’m on COBRA,” the American icon added.
“So it’s like, I got to get my benefits on. I started training again.”
“And let me tell you, I am always at the doctor’s. So I need this insurance,” she jested.

The 45-year-old American, Williams, defeated her compatriot Stearns 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the WTA event. This victory marked her 819th career WTA singles win for the seven-time Grand Slam champion in a 97-minute match at the first US Open hardcourt tune-up event on home soil.

Under COBRA, the federal law allows employees and their families to temporarily continue their employer-sponsored health insurance after certain qualifying events, such as a loss of job or a reduction in work hours.
