A final-year B.Tech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was found dead in his hostel room on Wednesday. This is the seventh such case at the institute in the past two years.

The student, identified as Dheeraj Saini (22) from Haryana, was studying electrical engineering and stayed in room number 123 of Hostel-1. Saini’s hostel-mates noticed a foul smell coming from his locked room and informed the authorities.

“A police team broke open the door and found Saini’s body hanging from the ceiling fan with a rope,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kalyanpur) Ranjeet Kumar told PTI

He added that no suicide note was found. The body was sent for post-mortem, and the cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy.

Saini had recently told his sister that he planned to visit home in December. His father, Satish Saini, who runs a sweet shop, broke down after hearing the news.

“IIT-K has swallowed my son…. I cannot explain how hard I worked to educate him,” he told police. He added that Dheeraj was hopeful of getting a job through campus placement by March.

Hostel-mates described him as quiet and said they had assumed he had gone home during the holidays. They did not check on him until the smell started coming from his room.

IIT Kanpur Mourns Loss, Assures Full Cooperation In Probe

IIT Kanpur expressed deep sorrow over the death of Dheeraj Saini and assured that it is fully cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

In an official statement, the Institute said: “With profound grief, IIT Kanpur mourns the tragic and untimely demise of Mr. Dheeraj Saini, an undergraduate final-year student in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Mr. Saini was a promising student and an active member of the Institute’s athletic team. The reasons leading to this tragic incident remain uncertain at this stage. However, IIT Kanpur is actively cooperating with the police and forensic team in the ongoing investigation.”

“The Institute is committed to taking all necessary measures to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future. At this hour of grief, the Institute expresses its condolences to the bereaved family and prays for them to find strength,” the institute added.
