After repeated last-minute offer cancellations across multiple campuses, the IIT Council barred over 20 firms to safeguard student opportunities and enforce hiring integrity.

IIT placements continue strongly despite Council ban on firms with hiring violations.
The Council of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has taken a firm stance this placement season by barring over 20 companies that failed to honour job commitments made to students. According to officials, several firms displayed a pattern of withdrawing offers close to onboarding or reducing promised pay packages, placing students at a disadvantage since many were barred from sitting for additional interviews after accepting an earlier offer. Officials say the move is intended to safeguard students’ placement security and hold recruiters accountable for their commitments.
An official involved in the placement process said that the decision to blacklist the firms was finalised during a recent meeting of the Council of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Many of the companies had either revoked offers or reduced salary packages that had already been committed to students. “We identified these companies and removed them from the placement process,” the official said.
The ban also includes companies whose official credentials or documents were found to be invalid or unverifiable. According to the official, any firm that fails to honour its commitments or does not possess proper, valid credentials will not be allowed to participate in IIT placements in the future.
The list of banned companies was compiled after placement teams noticed a pattern. These firms had cancelled offers at more than one IIT and, in many cases, had a history of doing so repeatedly. Several of the organisations on the banned list were from the software and data analytics sector. While they are barred from recruiting through official placement channels this year, they can still approach students directly or through off-campus hiring.
Despite the restrictions on certain firms, placements at IITs have begun on a strong note across campuses. At IIT Bombay, global companies, including major Silicon Valley recruiters such as Apple, Microsoft, and Google, participated on Day 1. A total of 42 companies have made 98 job offers so far, and students said they are expecting stronger numbers on Day 2.
IIT Madras began Phase 1 of its placement season on Monday, with more than 300 companies registered to recruit. Due to the institute’s outreach efforts, more than 100 established start-ups have also signed up for the drive.

Meanwhile, IIT Roorkee has seen particularly strong momentum in the first two days of placements. The institute recorded 436 offers on Day 1, including eight international roles. On Day 2, recruitment activity continued across two major slots, with 42 companies participating until 4 pm.
Companies such as Accenture, American Express, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, McKinsey & Company, MathWorks, NVIDIA, Postman, Razorpay, Urban Company, VISA, and Warner Bros. Discovery were among those recruiting at the campus. By 4 pm on 2 December, IIT Roorkee reported around 555 offers in total, including PPOs, with results from several companies still awaited.
The institute said a total of 116 companies have engaged with the recruitment process so far.
