Manchester City has entered the race to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, who was once a target of Liverpool, after the former club suffered twin injury blows, with Ruben Dias and left-back Josko Gvardiol suffering long-term injuries, according to a report in BBC Sport.
City will assess the severity of Gvardiol and Dias’ injuries before deciding whether to pursue a move for Guehi in the current transfer window.
According to the report, sources have said that Manchester City’s interest in Guehi, 25, has progressed and a move this month shouldn’t be discounted.
City have recalled academy defender Max Alleyne from his loan spell at Championship team Watford, with the youngster in contention for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Brighton.
Max, son of former England player and current Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne, made 17 appearances for the Hornets after joining on a season-long loan. However, the move has been cut short as City look to address their mounting defensive injury crisis.
After the draw with Chelsea, in which City conceded a stoppage-time equaliser, Pep Guardiola admitted to BBC Radio 5 Live that ‘it does not look good’ for Dias and Gvardiol, adding that the pair could be sidelined ‘for a few weeks’.
“We have a lot [of injuries]. John Stones has been missing for I don’t know how many months. Ruben will now be out, Josko will be out. Nathan [Ake], we always know he cannot play regularly,” Guardiola said.
Guehi was close to joining Liverpool in a £35 million move last summer, but Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal in the final hours of deadline day.
The Anfield club remain keen on Guehi and it now remains to be seen whether they are willing to accelerate their plans to sign the defender this summer.
Manchester City and Liverpool are also both interested in taking Guehi on a free transfer at the end of the season and according to the report, Palace would consider selling him in January to avoid the scenario of losing their skipper for nothing come the end of the season.
