Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi is set to miss the Italian side’s opening fixture at the 2025 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup after the 32-year-old was stranded in Tehran amid the conflict between Israel and Iran.

Taremi, who netted in Iran’s 3-0 win over North Korea in the World Cup qualifier between the sides last week, couldn’t get a flight out of Iran to join his Inter teammates in the United States of America.

Taremi remained in Iran for a few days longer compared to the rest of the Inter internationals in order to attend an Iranian award ceremony. The forward was presented with the ‘Toopa Award’, the first edition of the Iranian Golden Ball, at the gala.

Inter will look to turn the page on their disappointing UEFA Champions League Final outing, in which they were hammered 5-0 by the champions, PSG, at the 32-team group and knockout event in North America.

The revamped edition of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 was kicked off by Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, who were held to a goalless draw by Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly in the opener at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday.

Miami were without full-back Jordi Alba and midfielder Yannick Bright in the opener, as Javier Mascherano’s team relied on the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner to make a difference. The Argentine came close multiple times, including a free kick that hit the wrong side of the net, and a brilliant curling effort in second-half added time, which was tipped over the bar by the Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.

Miami’s goalkeeper Oscar Ustari prevented disappointment for his team in the first half by saving a penalty from the Egyptian player Trezeguet.
