Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala sustained a severe injury to his left leg and had to exit his team’s match against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in the Club World Cup quarterfinals.
Musiala was injured late in the first half following a 50-50 challenge with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The replay of the injury was not shown on the big screens at Mercedes Benz Stadium due to its severity.
The young German was left on the field, visibly distressed and screaming in pain after what appeared to be a severe lower leg injury.
Musiala’s left leg, particularly his ankle, got trapped under Donnarumma’s body as he lunged for the rolling ball. His ankle appeared to be severely twisted, suggesting a possible fracture or more severe injury. The 22-year-old was unable to stand on his own.
Bayern’s medical team hurried onto the pitch as Donnarumma, visibly distressed, collapsed to the ground, clutching his head in disbelief at the severity of the injury. Players from both teams formed a circle around Musiala, who was carried off the field on a stretcher.
Donnarumma was then seen with his hand on his face, realizing the seriousness of Musiala’s injury. Players from Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain comforted Donnarumma, assuring him that the incident was not his fault, while Musiala received medical attention.
Referee Anthony Taylor ended the first half prematurely following an incident, with the score tied at 0-0.
