The decision to keep schools and colleges closed comes amid torrential rains in the Jammu region, and intermittent rainfall lashing the Kashmir valley on Wednesday.

Due to flood-like conditions, all schools, colleges and educational institutes in Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed on Thursday (august 28), announced Education Minister Sakina Itoo. The decision comes as torrential rains continue to batter the Jammu region and intermittent rainfall impacts the Kashmir valley on Wednesday, reported PTI.
“Schools and Colleges across Jammu & Kashmir will remain closed tomorrow (28.08.2025) in view of inclement weather,” Itoo stated in a post on X on Wednesday.
Schools in Jammu have been closed since Monday, while educational institutions in six districts of Kashmir — Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Budgam, and Srinagar — were shut as a precaution on Wednesday.
Heavy rainfall has led to a flood-like situation across Jammu and Kashmir, causing the water level in the Jhelum river and other streams to rise above the flood declaration mark in Kashmir. Additionally, rivers and streams are flowing above the danger mark in the Jammu division, according to the PTI report.

Thousands of residents have been evacuated from flooded low-lying areas as torrential rains continued for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday, causing extensive damage throughout Jammu.
The Meteorological Department has predicted intermittent light to moderate rain in many parts of Jammu Division and South and Central Kashmir on Wednesday, with brief spells of rain and thunder expected at a few places on Thursday and Friday.
Punjab Schools Closed Till August 30
Continuous rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir has caused the rivers Sutlej, Beas, Ujh, and Ravi to overflow, resulting in severe flooding in several districts of Punjab. On Tuesday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that all schools in the state will be closed from August 27 to 30 due to heavy rain forecasts. The persistent rainfall over the past two days has led to flooding in numerous villages across various districts of the state.
