Italy’s Jannik Sinner consolidated his position atop the ATP world rankings on Monday despite his defeat to second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final.
Sinner, who lost to Alcaraz in the semi-finals last year, earned 500 points by reaching this year’s final.
Spaniard Alcaraz, claiming the title for the second consecutive year, gained no points and remained in second place.
Germany’s Alexander Zverev remained in third place despite his quarter-final loss to Novak Djokovic.
At 38, Serbian Djokovic, who could not win a set against Sinner in the semi-finals despite a strong effort, rose one place to fifth, still behind Jack Draper.
The Briton also climbed one place to a career-high fourth after his loss in the round of 16 to Alexander Bublik.
Bublik, subsequently defeated by Sinner, jumped 19 places to 43rd.
Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, who retired against Alcaraz in the semi-final, continued his rise, gaining another place to reach world number six for the first time.
Taylor Fritz, eliminated in the first round, dropped three places to seventh, while fellow American Tommy Paul climbed to eighth, his best ranking ever.
Casper Ruud, a two-time French Open finalist, fell eight places to 16th in the ATP rankings after his second-round exit this year.
