Japan’s Gunze FY25 profit jumps 22.9% despite apparel setback

Japanese clothing brand Gunze Limited has reported consolidated net sales of ¥137,117 million (~$882 million) for the fiscal ended March 31, 2025, marking a year-over-year (YoY) increase of 3.2 per cent. Operating profit rose 16.9 per cent to ¥7,921 million and ordinary profit grew by 20.8 per cent to ¥8,180 million. Profit attributable to owners of parent increased significantly by 22.9 per cent to ¥6,279 million.

Basic earnings per share (EPS) stood at ¥189.70, up from ¥150.55 in the previous year. The return on equity improved to 5.3 per cent from 4.4 per cent, and the ordinary profit to total assets ratio increased to 5.1 per cent, compared to 4.1 per cent last year.

Gunze Limited has reported net sales of ¥137,117 million (~$882 million) in FY2025, up 3.2 per cent YoY, with profit growth driven by non-apparel segments.
Apparel sales rose 1.1 per cent, but profit dropped 48.6 per cent due to higher costs and weak retail performance.
Moving into ‘Vision 2030 Stage 2,’ Gunze aims for sustainable growth through core business expansion and structural reforms.

The apparel business recorded net sales of ¥60,782 million (~$390.9 million), reflecting a modest YoY increase of 1.1 per cent. However, operating profit declined sharply by 48.6 per cent to ¥753 million. This significant drop was largely due to production cutbacks and increased purchase costs, driven in part by the depreciation of the yen, Gunze said in a press release.

While e-commerce sales expanded—boosted by the launch of the new Asedoron product line and differentiated ladies’ innerwear—sales through physical retail channels, particularly of men’s innerwear at mass retailers, remained sluggish. This was attributed to a reduction in sales floor space and the prolonged late-summer heat. Additionally, profitability was pressured by rising labour and other operational costs alongside elevated procurement expenses.

For FY25, the Gunze group stated that it will advance into ‘Vision 2030 Stage 2,’ the next phase of its medium-term management plan, spanning FY25 to FY27. Guided by its 2030 vision—’Create new value and deliver a feeling of comfort to customers, contributing to a sustainable society’—and the core theme of ‘Transform and Challenge,’ the group aims to drive both economic and social value, added the release.

This phase will focus on growing core businesses and implementing comprehensive structural reforms, as part of its broader goal to realise its envisioned future by 2030 through sustainable, value-driven management.
