JEE Main 2026: The JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams grant admission to India’s top engineering colleges, including IITs, NITs, and IIITs. Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is currently the most sought-after branch among B.Tech graduates, resulting in high ranks and cutoffs.

CSE represents technological thinking, ambition, innovation, and the future. This is why many engineering students in India view it as a top career choice. Each year, around 1.2 to 1.3 million students take the JEE Main exam. Of these, approximately 2.5 million qualify for JEE Advanced, and only about 40,000 secure spots in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other central government-funded engineering colleges. Let’s explore the required JEE ranks for admission to CSE courses at IITs, NITs, and IIITs.

Rank for CSE in IITs:

Admission to B.Tech programmes at IITs requires clearing the JEE Main exam followed by the JEE Advanced exam. At top IITs like Bombay, Delhi, Madras, and Kanpur, the All India Rank (AIR) for CSE ranges between 300-500 and AIR-1. Admission to newer and less established IITs is possible with AIR 1000-2000. In 2025, the CSE cutoff (open category) at IIT Bombay was 66, while the closing rank at IIT Delhi was 126. At IIT Patna, the closing rank was 3377.

Cutoff Rank for CSE in NITs:

After the IITs, the NITs are among the best engineering colleges in the country, with top institutions including Trichy, Surathkal, and Warangal. The CSE cutoff at top NITs ranges from AIR 500 to 2000, while the cutoff at mid- and lower-level NITs ranges from 5000 to 15000.

Rank for CSE in IIITs:

Admission to the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is also based on JEE Main rank. Many IIITs do not offer B.Tech in CSE, but IIIT Guwahati is an exception. Last year, its JEE Main cutoff was 22,739, while the IIIT Kota cutoff was 27,400.

The JEE Advanced 2026 will be held on May 17, 2026. The application process will remain open from April 23 to May 2, 2026. IIT Roorkee is responsible for conducting JEE Advanced 2026. Candidates set to appear for the exam can check the notice on the official website, jeeadv.ac.in. While the JEE Main session 1 exam concludes today, January 28.
