The Kolkata Zone of the Office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Customs has launched a personal carriage facility for gems and jewellery at Kolkata Port, aiming to streamline trade and boost exports from Eastern India.

Announced as a measure to improve the ease of doing business, the facility will allow exporters to hand-carry gems and jewellery for exhibitions and promotional events abroad, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council reported on its website. At the launch ceremony, customs officials outlined the procedures and guidelines for availing the service, highlighting its role in supporting the regional export ecosystem.
S H Dange, principal chief commissioner of customs for the Kolkata Zone, said the facility was introduced in the interest of the gems and jewellery sector and urged exporters to take advantage of the opportunity. The move is also expected to enhance Kolkata’s role as a hub for jewellery exports and improve logistical efficiency for regional exporters.
The event was attended by members of the GJEPC, including eastern regional chairman Pankaj Parekh and other regional committee members. Representatives from jewellery businesses such as Sabyasachi Calcutta LLP, Hasmukh Parekh Jewellers, and Modern Impex were also present and welcomed the initiative, citing its potential to simplify international participation and branding efforts.
