KVS Recruitment 2025: Over 10,000 positions are vacant in Kendriya Vidyalayas, mostly teaching-related. Out of the 56,520 sanctioned positions, only 46,347 have been filled. This shortage is affecting children’s education, and new admissions have steadily declined over the past five years.
The breakdown of sanctioned posts in Kendriya Vidyalayas is as follows: 50,414 posts for teaching staff, with 41,957 filled and 8,457 vacant. Out of 6,106 posts for non-teaching staff, 4,390 are filled, and 1,716 are vacant. Overall, out of 56,520 positions, 46,347 are filled, leaving 10,173 vacant. These figures were shared by the Ministry of Education in the Lok Sabha. Recruitment by category includes 17,427 vacancies in the unreserved category (UR), 13,211 for Other Backward Classes (OBC), 1,114 for Economically Weaker Section (EWS), 7,235 for Scheduled Castes (SC), and 2,970 for Scheduled Tribes (ST). Despite this, the total vacancies remain unfilled.
Why Are Vacancies Increasing?
The Ministry stated in the Lok Sabha that vacancies arise continuously due to the opening of new KVs, retirements, resignations, promotions, transfers, and school upgrades. This is an ongoing process, so recruitment never stops. Efforts are made to fill these posts promptly as per recruitment rules, but new schools increase vacancies. In December 2024, the government approved 85 new KVs, and in October 2025, 57 more were approved. Under the PM Shri scheme, work is also underway to develop KVs and Navodaya Vidyalayas into model institutions, further increasing staffing requirements.
Since 2014, there have been 30,876 recruitments for teaching staff. Total recruitment across all years, categories, and post types is 33,350. The highest record was in 2022-23, with 11,733 teachers recruited. In 2014-15, only 93 teaching recruitments were made. In 2015-16, there were 3,784 teaching and 555 non-teaching appointments. In 2016-17, there were 6,193 teaching vacancies. In 2017-18, 9,073 teaching and 783 non-teaching positions were filled. In 2022-23, recruitments included 11,733 teaching and 1,134 non-teaching positions.
Contract Teachers
To ensure education continues despite vacancies, KVs appoint contract teachers locally. These appointments are temporary until regular teachers join. In 2014-15, 7,534 contract teachers were appointed, 7,873 in 2015-16, 9,061 in 2016-17, and 7,568 in 2017-18. Before the pandemic, the highest number was 9,539 in 2018-19. There were 8,912 in 2019-20, but due to the lockdown, the number was 3,260 in 2020-21. In 2021-22, there were 8,105, and in 2022-23, a record 10,462 contract teachers were recruited. In 2023-24, there were 3,404, and in 2024-25, there are currently 6,920 contract teachers. This arrangement helps maintain the education system, but there is still a shortage of regular staff.
Decline In Admissions
New admissions to Kendriya Vidyalayas have been steadily declining for the past five years. There are 1,280 KVs in the country, enrolling 1,350,518 students. However, the ministry stated that there were 195,081 new admissions in 2020-21, falling to 182,846 in 2021-22, and 157,914 in 2022-23. This figure rose to 175,386 in 2023-24, but in 2024-25, the lowest number of admissions was 139,660, meaning more than 55,000 fewer new students compared to 2020-21.
