England stalwart Kyle Walker has officially called time on his international career, bringing the curtain down on a 14-year spell with the national team that included 96 caps and appearances at five major tournaments.

The 36-year-old defender confirmed his decision on Tuesday, ending a journey that began with his England debut in 2011 and saw him become one of the country’s most reliable defenders for more than a decade.

Walker played a key role during one of England’s most competitive modern eras, featuring prominently in the squads that reached the European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024.

However, with the next World Cup approaching and younger options emerging in defence, Walker felt the time was right to step away from international duty.

“Proud of what I achieved”

Walker admitted the decision was emotional but said he leaves the international stage with immense pride.

“I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I’ve achieved with England,” Walker said.

“To represent my country at five major tournaments, to get to the finals that we’ve reached and to be surrounded by this England team, especially the players and the managers that I’ve had the privilege of working under, has been a great honour.”

His final appearance for England came in a 2025 friendly against Senegal.

“But today is the time that comes to an end. It’s good for me to have a little bit of closure to my career on the international stage.”

Walker finishes as the 10th most-capped player in England men’s history, just four matches short of the century mark.

Tributes pour in

England manager Thomas Tuchel was quick to pay tribute to the veteran defender.

“I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career,” Tuchel said.

“I was always aware that he was one of England’s greats who fully embraced the highest honour of representing his country.”

“An international career spanning 14 years and five major tournament is testament to Kyle’s dedication.”

The Football Association also confirmed that Walker will receive a tribute at a future England fixture following the upcoming World Cup.
