Brentford edged out Aston Villa on penalties, while Crystal Palace also survived a scare as they got the better of Millwall in the shoot-out after both games ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time on Wednesday in the League Cup.

Brentford and Palace managed to pip Aston Villa and Millwall respectively 4-3 on penalties in the shoot-out while Grimsby registered a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Harvey Elliott, who joined Aston Villa on loan from Liverpool on deadline day, scored Villa’s first goal of the season on his full debut, capitalizing on a mistake by Brentford goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson.

However, Aaron Hickey equalized for Brentford with a spectacular goal, and Valdimarsson redeemed himself by saving penalties from John McGinn and Matty Cash in the shoot-out.

Mikkel Damsgaard scored the winning penalty, allowing Brentford to advance and adding to the troubles of Villa manager Unai Emery, whose team failed to score in their first four Premier League matches.

At Selhurst Park, FA Cup holders Crystal Palace survived a scare after Camiel Neghli and Josh Coburn missed golden opportunities to put Millwall ahead.

Palace defender Chris Richards scored with a close-range strike in the 72nd minute when Millwall failed to clear a corner. The Lions equalized through Ryan Leonard’s glancing header in stoppage time, before Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta missed a clear chance from six yards, which could be considered a candidate for miss of the season.

The south London derby turned in Palace’s favour in the shoot-out as debutant goalkeeper Walter Benitez saved spot-kicks from Tristan Crama and Aidomo Emakhu.

Fourth-tier Grimsby reached the League Cup fourth round for the first time in 24 years with a 1-0 win at Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday.

Jaze Kabia headed the winner in the 49th minute from a corner, extending Grimsby’s run in the competition after their stunning penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United in the previous round.

Grimsby, performing well in League Two with only one loss in their first eight matches, added Wednesday to their list of scalps with a composed display.

Wednesday fans were outnumbered in their own stadium as they continue to boycott certain games in protest against club owner Dejphon Chansiri, while over 6,000 travelling Grimsby fans enjoyed the moment.
