When the conversation shifted to the trials and tribulations of period pain, Tina shared her two cents on how a lot of young girls face debilitating menstrual cramps, which, she claimed, can be solved by improving lifestyle and making necessary changes.

“Maybe my body is a little desi. I have never had any back pain. Everything is perfect, 28-day cycle. But, here I see girls always talking about…You eat your ghee, stop dieting so much, you have a good night’s sleep, and everything becomes normal. Most of the girls diet so much looking at Instagram, listening to it, that problems which don’t even exist happen,” she told Hauterrfly.

N Sapna Lulla, Lead Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynecology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, said that period pain, also known as dysmenorrhea, is a common issue many women face during their menstrual cycle. “It occurs due to the contraction of the uterus as it sheds its lining, which can lead to discomfort and cramping. Hormones called prostaglandins are released during this process, and higher levels of these hormones can result in more intense pain,” she explained.

Factors such as stress, lack of exercise, and certain medical conditions can also contribute to the severity of period pain.

Does ghee really help?

“Ghee, a type of clarified butter, is rich in healthy fats and can help reduce inflammation in the body. It is believed that incorporating ghee into the diet can provide warmth and nourishment, which may help reduce cramps. However, while ghee can be a part of a balanced diet, it is essential to maintain moderation and not rely solely on it for pain relief,” said Dr Lulla.

She suggested several simple strategies to prevent and treat period pain, starting with regular exercise, which helps improve blood circulation and reduce cramps. Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can also support overall health.

“Applying heat to the lower abdomen, practicing relaxation techniques, and considering over-the-counter pain relief medications can provide much-needed comfort during menstruation,” the expert said.
