On social media, you will find a remedy for everything. But since all that is served on the platform must be consumed with a pinch of salt, we decided to take up a few common trending ‘solutions’ and verify them with help from experts for the greater good.
So let’s get started.
1. ‘Applying raw honey on scars overnight will make them vanish in weeks’
Quashing the claim outright, Dr Shireen Furtado, senior consultant, medical and cosmetic dermatology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, said there may sometimes be “inadvertent bacteria in the honey which may infect raw wounds”. “It is prudent to use anti-microbial ointments that have proven results rather than run a risk of infecting wounds. Collagen remodeling is the basis of scar therapy. It is unlikely that a large molecule like honey can cause a collagen remodeling effect,” said Dr Furtado.
The expert said it is best to opt for treatments like nonablative fractional collagen-building lasers since scar healing is a complex process influenced by various factors. “For optimal scar management, it’s recommended to consult a dermatologist who will assess scar-appropriate treatments and provide guidance on skin care routines,” said Dr Furtado.
2. ‘Chia seeds help with breast growth as they increase estrogen levels in the body’
Edwina Raj, head of services, clinical nutrition and dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore ,said chia seeds have not been proven to directly increase estrogen levels. “Chia seeds increase estrogen levels is a misconception. While chia seeds are a nutritious food packed with fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, they do not contain hormones and therefore cannot directly influence estrogen production. But, there is no doubt that it improves gut health,” said Edwina.
She added, “It’s essential to remember that hormonal health is complex, and dietary changes alone might not be sufficient to address hormonal imbalances.”

Agreed, Dr Ashini Bhatt, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Mayflower Women’s Hospital, Ahmedabad, and said that good hormonal balance in the body is needed for proper breast growth. “Foods containing phytoestrogens, omega-3 and antioxidants can help maintain hormonal balance. However, these things (growth) are genetically predetermined, and are also mildly to moderately affected by lifestyle choices and food habits. So, unless both are considered, a proper remedy is questionable,” said Dr Bhatt.

3. ‘Eating 3 oranges a day will help boost metabolism, and get rid of bloating’
“This is a myth”, said Edwina adding that while oranges are undoubtedly a healthy fruit packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, they cannot be a solution for weight management or digestive issues. “Oranges provide essential nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, and fibre. However, they won’t directly target metabolism or bloating in a significant way. A sustainable approach is essential for the same,” Edwina stressed.
Dr Bhatt stated that all fruits containing high vitamin C, soluble fibre, and antioxidants support metabolism. “But you do not need 3 oranges to fix metabolism. Rather, go for seasonal fruits. Bloating has many underlying causes, which need to be evaluated and fixed separately,” said Dr Bhatt.

4. ‘Swishing coconut oil in the mouth at night whiten teeth in a few days’
Coconut oil pulling has gained popularity as an oral hygiene practice. However, it’s essential to approach it with realistic expectations. “Coconut oil does possess antimicrobial properties that can help reduce oral bacteria, improve gum health, and potentially give fresher breath. However, limited scientific evidence supports whitening teeth in just a few days. Professional dental treatments often yield more significant results,” said Edwina.
While coconut oil pulling can be a complementary oral care practice, it shouldn’t replace regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, added Edwina.
5. ‘Moringa powder will shrink the waist’
While moringa is a potent nutrient-packed leafy vegetable with several health benefits, “there is not enough research to support it would help lose weight or fat in specific areas like the waist”. “Moringa powder is very high in fibre and protein, which keeps you full and satiated for a longer period, enabling you to control your calorie intake, and in turn, aiding weight loss in the entire body, and not just the waist,” said Dr Bhatt.

However, it may not be for everyone to use as a regular remedy.
According to Edwina, weight loss requires a sustainable holistic approach that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. “It’s advisable to seek professional guidance and a customized diet plan for weight loss,” said Edwina.
