For a long time, it was believed that students who did not study biology or biotechnology as a core subject in the 12th grade could not become doctors. However, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has relaxed the eligibility criteria, providing significant relief to millions of students who chose the PCM stream in the 12th grade.
Stream barriers to medical education have been removed, and the path to becoming a doctor is no longer limited to biology students. This move by the NMC aims to bring flexibility to education, as suggested in the New Education Policy (NEP). Students who studied mathematics in grades 11 and 12 can now qualify for medical courses like MBBS and BDS by taking biology as an additional subject. This change will provide more career options and will also be beneficial for students who want to change their career path.

New NMC Rules: What and How?
Under the old rules, studying biology as a core subject for two years in grades 11 and 12 was mandatory for the NEET exam. Under the new NMC rules, those who have passed grade 12 and now want to pursue a medical degree, they can take biology/biotechnology as an additional subject from any recognised board.
NEET UG Eligibility Rules
If a student completed their 12th grade with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths (PCM) subjects and later passed Biology as an additional subject, they are fully eligible to appear for the NEET. Successful candidates can then seek admission to an MBBS course at any medical college in India or abroad.
This rule is a boon for students who are confused about career choices after class 10. Often, due to pressure or lack of information, students choose PCM for engineering but later shift their inclination towards medical education.
Opportunity for a career U-turn: Now, these students can change their path even after completing 12th grade with mathematics. They simply need to pass the Biology/Biotechnology exam as an additional subject from any recognised board.
Gap year worries are over: Previously, students had to repeat their entire 11th and 12th grades, including Biology. Now, they can qualify for NEET by taking just one subject. This will save time and allow them to simultaneously pursue engineering (JEE) and medical (NEET) courses.
Age Limit: To appear for the NEET-UG exam, candidares must be at least 17 years old by December 31st of the admission year. There is currently no upper age limit, which allows students from diverse backgrounds to become doctors.
Required Marks: Simply passing the 12th board exam is not enough. General category students must have a minimum aggregate score of 50% in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology).
Relief for Reserved Categories: Students from OBC, Scheduled Caste (SC), and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories have been granted relaxation in the eligibility criteria. They must have 40% marks in PCB. For students belonging to the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) category, this limit has been reduced to 45%.
Addition of marks of additional subject: If a student has taken Biology as an additional subject, then their marks in that subject will also be considered for eligibility calculation.
